What do you think of this quote?
“True fear of God is exemplified in how you order your life to AVOID sin.” (Caps part of the original quote)
The moment I read this on Face Book, it rubbed me the wrong way. Don’t get me wrong. There is a ring of truth to it. If we have genuine reverence for God, we won’t order our lives to sin on purpose. On the other hand, if we genuinely revere and worship God, we will celebrate His glorious grace revealed in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:6). The FB quote could make one think the Gospel is a list of things NOT to do, instead of what it really is: an invitation into a grace-filled life with Jesus that compels us toward obedience as a positive, rather than a negative calling.
Jesus came to set us free from the condemning ownership and control of sin, not so we can live in fear of sinning, but so we can escape sin’s condemnation and rise above it in His power. Following Jesus isn’t about straining hard not to sin. It’s about resting in His grace and abiding in the God who forgives us fully, loves us completely and continually makes us more like Him.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Mt 11:28-30
